Governor Lynch – We’re watching you

Yesterday the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to legalize same-sex marriage.  Don’t get too excited though.  According to the New York Times the Democratic Governor, John Lynch will probably veto the bill if the Senate passes it.  Yes, there are Democrats who are prepared to stop marriage equality.

Call Governor Lynch at (603)271-2121 and tell him that separate is never equal, that people from all over the country are looking to him to stand for equality and justice, regardless of whether the marriage equality bill comes to his desk, and that if the bill does come to his desk, he should sign it.

New Hampshire's Governor Lynch Is Against Marriage Equality

Said his silver tongued flack Colin Manning, “Governor Lynch has not supported same-sex marriage, but the civil union bill he signed into law prevents discrimination and provides the same legal protection to all New Hampshire families to the extent that is possible under federal law.”

It’s the same separate-but-equal logic that Vermont’s governor is using.

If he vetoes this bill it will be interesting to hear what Ray Buckley, the openly gay chairman of the the New Hampshire Democratic Party has to say about it.  One thing is for sure.  If he does veto it, gay people from all over the country better make sure that there are consequences.

In the meantime, let the Governor know you’re wise to his position and tell him you want him to change it.

Some might say it’s premature to call him.  After all, the bill hasn’t passed the Senate yet.  Don’t worry.  We’ll find out who in the Senate could benefit from a call.  But with gay people having raised so much money to elect and re-elect Democrats in 2008, we’re entitled to speak up when they send p.r. flacks like Colin Manning to convince us that separate is equal.

With the Governor of New Hampshire having been helped in no small part in his own re-election by the gay chairman of his state party, he really should know better.  Even if the bill doesn’t make it to his office, he deserves to hear from the people.

ACTION:

Yes, we fellow dems are watching, even from our small enclave within Salt Lake City. We need the hope of change more than anyone. So whoever should read this call Governor Lynch at (603)271-2121 and tell him we all know he will do the right thing and sign the marriage equality bill – or to at least let it pass without a signiture if he’s fearing his wife will put him in the doghouse for doing so.
