Little Miss Sunshine: Maggie Gallagher

Don’t be fooled by this pretty face.  It’s the face of evil.  If you haven’t met yet, it’s Maggie Gallagher, who is most succintly described as Anita Bryant for the New Millenium without the orange juice.  The head of the National Organization for Marriage, Maggie has launched two scary anti-marriage radio ads in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine which predictably blame the economic depression on marriage equality legislation pending in those states.  The ads were produced by Schubert Flint Public Affairs, the same hatemongers who managed the Yes On 8 Proposition 8 campaign in California.  Just as in California, the ads stress that marriage will be shoved down voters throats, “Whether we like it or not.”

One ad, backed by ominous music befitting a John Carpenter movie, darkly proclaims “Legalizing gay marriage has consequences for kids.”  Doesn’t that sound like an episode of Law & Order SVU?

Another ad is backed by an unnerving repeated beep that sounds like an EKG on the fritz in an ICU.  Someone could die!  The ad warns that if legislators pass a marriage equality bill, soon children “will be thinking the unthinkable.”  Not the unthinkable?!?!

What’s The Unthinkable you may ask?  A kid wondering, “If my dad married another man, who would my mom be?”   Let’s think about this for a second.  If your dad married another woman, your mother would be that person suing your dad for child support and alimony.  That’s not hard to figure out.  You know it wouldn’t be any different if your dad married another man.  Clearly the scariest thing about this ad is not gay marriage, but how stupid the kids are.

But seriously, this website is terrifying in its simplicity.  The ads are creepy and the actions are simple.  And while this may be one of the most fear and hate provoking websites out there, it’s still able to get away with criticizing Barney Frank for calling Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia a homophobe.  The site actually asks visitors to send Barney Frank a message that, “Hate is not an American value. Stop the insults, Stop the childish Name-calling.”  Unbelievable.

Here’s some contact info for the ad’s creators and National Organization for Marriage.  Knock yourself out.

Ad creators:  Email these guys and tell them to stop profiteering from hate.

Thanks for being here. Let me know what else I can do.

    this was MY letter:

    Gentlemen and Bigots:

Why do you waste your creative talents promoting causes which utilize dissention, anger, hate and ignorance to flourish?

    Is spreading
FEAR and HATE such a profitable business, considering that in fact, belief or no belief, we are on the verge of literal extinction from this planet?

Do you think God will reverse Global Warming and the planetary and Cosmic alignments of 12/21/2012 and it’s potential for global upheaval if YOU KILL ALL THE GAY FOLKS OFF?

I am a 55 year old heterosexual individual who’s had the privilege of working with dozens of the finest people I’ve ever known who happened to also be homosexual.

Your spreading of terrors and bigotry which by nature are Un American, in that they seek to DEPRIVE a class and group of people of a Right so intrinsic to happiness that you profane the Declaration of Independence and stain my
country with puke and bile with your false words.

I’m sickened by your attack on my Friends.

The film footage you used in California, focusing on the one
tiny blonde girl with red eyes in DETAIL failed to point out that the little girl was at the Wedding of her Teacher, my GOD have you EVER seen a wedding where people did not cry? It was reprehensible and VOYERISTIC.

You are morons and, like G. Bush filled only with anger and emptiness, you have nothing GOOD to do in life so you prefer to prosper by seeding hate and stealing peoples Rights.

You may think yourselves “soldiers” for Jesus, but you are His Antithesis and very ungodly.

You are Soldiers for Al Qeida and other Anti American forces, you should wear paramilitary gear and carry IED’s. You probably do.

May your own hate consume you and disease fill your dreams. May the living GOD have mercy on your blood stained hands and cell phones.

  3. I just sent an email to them both. I can’t believe that after all this time and all the history that we have had to learn from, the LGBT community has to be treated unfarily and unjustly. We are American citizens that pay our taxes just like any one else. Whatever else I need to do please let me know.

  4. I find it ironic that these people think they know better then the writers of the constitution… I don’t think I can say anything better then what they have already said when it comes to individual rights and equality.

“No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him.”
    ~Thomas Jefferson

“Of liberty I would say that, in the whole plenitude of its extent, it is unobstructed action according to our will. But rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law,’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual.”
    ~Thomas Jefferson

This just happens to be one of my favorites…

“That the desires of the majority of the people are often for injustice and inhumanity against the minority, is demonstrated by every page of the history of the whole world”
    ~John Adams

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.”

    – Steven Weinberg

  7. I wonder how many millions of dollars — earned by hard-working, just-minded, and loving Mormons — the Mormon Church leadership will waste in efforts to overturn the unanimous Iowa Supreme Court decision. I firmly believe that It is not moral or decent for Mormon Church leadership to once again throw away Church members’ money, just because Mormon leadership dislikes GLBTs & LGBT relationships (or for whatever so-called religious reasons Mormon leadership uses to discriminate against GLBTs). That money could be better spent for thousands of other good and loving purposes, such as for example feeding and educating hungry and malnourished children in the U.S. and other countries.
